Caitlyn Shi — Rising Cello Star & Award-Winning Principal Cellist
At just 13 years old, Caitlyn Shi has already distinguished herself as an accomplished young cellist through her exceptional progress, musical leadership, and dedication to artistic excellence. Her performances reflect not only a strong technical foundation, but also an emerging musical maturity, expressive sensitivity, and remarkable poise beyond her years.
Caitlyn’s regional orchestra journey began in 2024, when she earned 7th Chair Cello in the Region XXV Bach Orchestra. Just one year later, she achieved an impressive advancement, earning 2nd Chair Cello in the 2025 Region XXV Brahms Orchestra—the region’s premier middle school ensemble, ranked two levels above the Bach Orchestra. Her rapid rise into the highest-level regional ensemble is a powerful reflection of her disciplined practice, determination, and extraordinary musical growth.
During the 2025–2026 school year, Caitlyn served as Principal Cellist of the Curtis Middle School Symphony Orchestra. In this leadership role, she guided her section through increasingly sophisticated repertoire while demonstrating confidence, responsibility, and a strong commitment to ensemble excellence. Her musicianship and character were further recognized in 2026 when she received the Allen Independent School District Exemplary Musician Award, an honor celebrating outstanding artistry, leadership, and reliability.
Caitlyn studies cello under the guidance of Dr. Mengmeng Huang, whose thoughtful mentorship has played an essential role in developing her technical command, expressive phrasing, musical interpretation, and stage presence. Through their continued work together, Caitlyn has grown into a confident and compelling young performer.
From earning a place in the region’s premier orchestra to leading her school ensemble as Principal Cellist, Caitlyn continues to reach exciting new milestones with grace and determination. Her achievements represent only the beginning of a promising musical journey, and we are incredibly proud to celebrate her continued growth and success.
